As a ballroom dancer and emerging photographer, Raeley Stevenson is excited to share her combination of two passions into one photographic series. Ballroom Dance in Motion is a photographic series capturing the basics of various American style ballroom dances. Each pattern was captured using a single exposure of three to eleven seconds. The result exemplifies what so many of us admire about ballroom; the rhythm, sway, shape, character, and ultimately the motion.
What happened last night? Where am I? Were these memories just a crazy dream or did they actually happen?
My mom, sisters, and now sister-in-law went on a hike up part of the Stevenson Trail near Chattanooga, TN. I decided to practice my documentary skills and took pictures as we hiked.
What most ballet photographs capture are the single poses, expressions, and bodies of the dancers but what they miss is the motion. The motion of ballet is so hard to se even with our eyes because it is ever changing, but the camera can capture an image over time. This gives me the ability to show you how beautiful and emotional ballet dancers movements are. Knowing a few dancers personally, ballet is more than just a dance. Ballet is an experience, a lifestyle, and a passion. When the dancers move, their passion comes out in their dedicated grace and power.
